The London section
has active links
with
local academic institutions and promotes the sponsoring of student
membership .
We encourage
our key points of
contact to attend our monthly committee meetings and where possible sit
on the committee as either general members or with specific positions
such as currently:
• Professional Development
Officer (London Met. University)
• Education officer
(City
University)
Our current ‘main’ list of academic establishments is as follows:
1. London
Metropolitan University
2. City University,
London
3. University of
Reading
4. University of
Kent
5. University of
Greenwich
Each year the London section of the
Institute of Measurement and Control confirm to the various academic
institutions details relating to sponsorship for students wishing to
join the Institute of Measurement and Control as student members. The
sponsorship is to pay for their student membership fees for the three
years that they are in full time education.
We set a
nominal level of
sponsorship
each year and re-assess this based on the feedback we get. We then
return the appropriate membership application forms to these students
in the New Year and look to process them by the end of January so that
it can be announced in the February issue of the journal. Gower Street
is provided with a list of the students and their associated university
in order for them to invoice the section for the costs of this
sponsorship.
We can receive
anywhere from 10-30
nominations from each University, the Universities then take the
opportunity to award these Free three year student memberships
to
their students.
In parallel to
the above we also
look
to award a student prize to a student from each University that has
been studying Instrumentation and Control or a closely related field to
be presented at our Annual Dinner in April of each year.
The prize is
typically £100
and
is for outstanding academic achievement, the University makes the
student selection. The student must agree to attend the annual dinner
in London to accept the prize.
At the annual dinner we include in our proceedings: Student
Awards
- For OUTSTANDING
ACADEMIC
ACHIEVEMENT
Each student
nominated for a prize
is
sponsored by a third party also attending the dinner, the nominated
student award representative presents the student with their prize. You
can see details and photographs of the recent award winners in the Student
Awards area below.
Procedure: The Chairman is to:
- Detail the method for selecting each student
- Acknowledge the sponsors & universities
for their
support
- Call each student & respective sponsor
up to present
the award
- Photos of each award to be taken by Malcolm
George
More recently we have being looking at raising our profile and dialogue
with the universities, with a view to:
• Providing more information to the
students
about what the IMC can offer
• Providing regular updates for posting
on the
IMC notice board
• Trying to find out more about what the
students want from the IMC or how we cold support them better
• Looking at how we can stay in touch
with the
students with a view to encouraging them to join the IMC as graduates
